Each month, we are inviting you to browse the web and discover our selection of exhibits, places, personalities, projects and creations of outdoor works of art, and more… For this first journey, and to escape the Parisian dull weather, we are taking you to a mirage city in Arizona, to Belgian coastal landscapes and to an English sculpture garden, on the New York rooftops and to the Bosphorus to meet an Argentinean artist, and to a wave in New Orleans.

Read – Michael Heizer Grand Œuvre soon to be completed?

For those who haven’t followed the political debate surrounding the protection of the land on which Michael Heizer has been building his City since the 1970s, here are some excellent news in a recent article from the Art Newspaper announcing the protection of 700 acres surrounding this work (now called Basin and Range National Monument). Moreover, thanks in great part to its charismatic director Michael Govan, the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art (LACMA) has raised nearly 12 million dollars to allow the artist to complete his “grand oeuvre”…

Along the Belgian coast, the 2015 edition of the Beaufort Biennial, “Beyond Borders”, gathers the works of 35 contemporary artists including Katinka Bock, Yona Friedman, Oscar Tuazon, Nicolas Provost, Polly Apfelbaum, Mark Lombardi, Claire Fontaine or Pablo Helguera. The three curators (among whom Lorenzo Benedetti, who was recently shamefully ousted from his position as director of Amsterdam’s De Appel) treat us here with exquisite journeys and a beautiful reflection on the link between art and nature.

Discover – A Sunday in the countryside at Hauser & Wirth Somerset

Last year, the powerful London gallery Hauser & Wirth opened a space in the English countryside. Hauser & Wirth Somerset is altogether a gallery, an art center, and a place for artists to meet and to stay in residence. The land that surrounds the former and now rehabilitated farm has been handed out to landscaper Piet Oudolf, who is famous for his collaboration with architect Peter Zumthor on their pavilion at the Serpentine Gallery of London in 2011. Works by modern and contemporary artists such as Jenny Holzer, Alexander Calder and Dan Graham, are displayed on the property.

Meet – Adrian Villar Rojas, the artist

A recent article of the New York Times Magazine unveiled the secret of a “ghost” installation by Adrian Villar Rojas atop the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York… Enough to make us extremely eager to see his exhibit at the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York (September 9th to October 10th) and his installation on the banks of the Bosphorus, close to Trotsky’s villa, for the Istanbul Biennial…

Watch – The Benglis wave

Finally, here is a fascinating video offered by Art21 on Lynda Benglis’ Wave. This year, we have had the pleasure of rediscovering the American artist’s work thanks to two major exhibits: last spring’s retrospective at the Hepworth Wakefield in England and an outdoor exhibit (closing November 8th) that includes several monumental fountains at the Storm King Art Center in New York State. With this video, we rediscover one of Benglis’ emblematic works, which also happens to be her first fountain, entitled The Wave of the World (1983-84). It was first created for the Louisiana World Exposition and disappeared in 2005 after hurricane Katrina. This video shows how this work finds its roots in Benglis’ Louisiana childhood, how it was created and how it’s been recently restored by the Modern Art Foundry in Astoria, New York. The Wave of the World is currently displayed at New Orleans City Park.
