The Maeght Foundation, a Timeless Must-See
A must-see: the Maeght Foundation remains a magical site!
Its inauguration soirees, featuring artists, jazz singers and intellectuals, are undeniably memorable. Its many exhibitions – more than a hundred since its opening – attract more visitors each year. But it is first and foremost thanks to sculpture, brilliantly displayed in a natural setting, that the Maeght Foundation has kept its prestige and remains a treasure that can undoubtedly stand being revisited over and over.
In 1957, after visiting Miró’s studio in Palma de Mallorque, Aimé and Marguerite Maeght asked his architect, Joseph Lluis Sert, to design a space dedicated to creation and to artists. The museum owes its success mostly to this genius architect who managed to create on this site an amazing balance between art, light and architecture, which today, fifty years later, is truly striking.
Behind the small entrance gate lays a small paradise of modernism.
The mythical icons of the Foundation, sculptures by Miró, Giacometti and Calder, often steal the show. But other, less famous treasures add to the wealth of the collection: the black and white “wings” ballet of L’éolienne by Takis, Bury’s fountain or Chillida’s and Dodeigne’s granit sculptures, which seem to be conversing in a dialogue of geometry and curves.
In the chapel, don’t miss Ubac’s stain glass window, facing the one by Braque, as well as the exquisite door knobs designed by Diego Giacometti, and, at the top of the tower, another Oiseau perché by Miró.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Foundation also offers temporary exhibitions beautifully and expertly displaying works by new artists.
Despite the absurd additional fee applied to visitors who want to be able to take pictures, the perfectly maintained grounds and buildings of the Maeght Foundation are most definitely a must-see.
