Every summer, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York commissions an outdoor installation to be displayed on the rooftop of the museum. For the year 2014, the artwork was designed by American artist Dan Graham with the collaboration of Swiss landscape architect Günther Vogt. Hedge Two-Way Mirror Walkabout is a steel and glass pavilion, both transparent and reflective, and framed with ivy hedgerows. The work is evocative of the surrounding skyscrapers as well as of European maze gardens of the 18th century. Dan Graham welcomed us in his New York studio. “The piece is a metaphor for the city as a labyrinth”, he says. “The place is for children to interact, people to relax and look at the treetops. It’s like visiting the Empire State building!”
