The MACBA (Barcelona) and the Palacio de Cristal (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid) start 2019 by showcasing Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa (1955, Barcelona, Spain).

The MACBA is currently presenting a retrospective of the artist, retracing three decades of his artistic career, from 1980 to today. The exhibition starts with an interrogation mark sculpted in steel, which goes straight to the heart of his work: sculpture as a questioning tool. Internationally known for his public installations, his work is present in different American, European, and Asian cities. For the first time in the history of the MACBA, an exhibition stretches outdoors to the interior courtyard, where two groups of sculptures have been installed: The Heart of Trees (2007) and The Heart of Rivers (2016).

As a counterpoint to the MACBA exhibition, the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid is occupying the Cristal Palace with a group of three monumental steel mesh sculptures that create faces suspended in space. A beautiful play on transparencies takes place with the sites’s architecture, entirely made of glass and steel.
